I took refuge from the masses at a little campsite next to kitchen creek falls. It was certainly an oasis after a hot hike from Lake Morena. Especially for a bro who had never hiked before, and was carrying way too much stuff.

Heading down to Lake Morena for the kickoff. I totally bailed early on the kickoff as there were so many people.

This is one of the roads leading to all that jazz below.

Could use a new monument. This one is far too dangerous to play on.

This is the start of the trail. Directly behind me is the Mexican border.

Food

Since I did not want to get stuck eating snickers and ramen noodles, I decided  the majority of my food resupply would be via mail. This was the most stressful aspect of planning this hike. Though, it will certainly be nice not to have to worry about food on the trail.

Purchasing five months worth of food is expensive. Buying in bulk, and taking major advantage of sales, I was able to purchase everything I needed for less than I expected.

Shipping food is very expensive, and trying to fit everything into a reasonably sized box takes trial and error. I planned on using USPS priority mail flat rate boxes. This limited  how much room I had per box. I was really worried about not being able to fit enough calories into a box to make it worth my while. It all worked out though.

Each box will contain 5 days worth of resupply. Those few resupplies where I need more than 5 days worth I will receive two boxes. All total I will be receiving 25-30 resupply boxes.

My list of food resupply items are below:

                                                           weight/calories
organic dehydrated potato flakes         16oz 3360
organic dehydrated black bean flakes  16oz 1690
trader joes raw almond butter              16oz 2660
organic qunoia                                     12oz 1290
trader joes swiss milk choc                    7oz 1100
stakich raw honey                                20oz 1667
organic just blueberry powder                8oz 800
organic just straw/ban powder                8oz 800
organic just veggies                                8oz 800
nativas coconut water powder                3oz 350
kind bars                                               6oz 380
wildplanet tuna                                      3oz 360
jarrow whey protein                              6oz 600
organic toaster pastries                      11oz 1260
trader joes organic condensed milk    14oz 1300

This works out to around 3700 calories per day. Hopefully that will be enough to keep me from looking like Christian Bale's character in The Machinist. I also will be hitting all available restaurants along the way.
